This little kit lens is a gem at an unbelievable price. Technology, mass production, and computer design make it possible.
It's very sharp! This will come to a surprise to those that knock kit lenses. Of course there are sharper lenses out there, but in all practicality, this lens is fine. Many people blame the lack of sharpness on their lens while it may actually be camera shake. Watch the shutter speeds. For real fine work, a tripod and the self timer gave me exceptionally sharp images from this lens.
NOTE: There is a VR version available if you want to push hand held photography before using a tripod.
It does have a plastic mount. These days, many things are made with plastic. It may wear out a little sooner than a metal mount. However, I don't expect this to be a problem for most people.
All in all, this lens produces exceptional images at all focal lengths in many situations. For real low light work w/o flash, you may want to consider fixed lenses. However, if you're starting out, this lens can be pushed pretty far once you become skilled with the camera settings. So learn with it before purchasing additional lenses.
In conclusion, Nikon makes a kit lens that is very good!

you can buy it if you don't want to spend $$ or want to have it as a spare lens. The major limitation is with colors and and sharpness.
