i received this camera as a gift. WOW what
great pictures it takes. easy to learn, very fast shutter, light weight. i have taken only about 200 photos so far and purchased a 55-200vr lense to go along with the 18-55 lense that came with the camera. together these lenses and camera take the best pictures I have ever taken. EXCELLENT. there are many cameras out there that take good pictures but NIKON cameras with their lenses are second to none for the price. my friend is a professional and this is the camera she carries every day for fast accurate day to day shots. COOL.

This is a great camera for someone wanting to break into photography. The manual mode has all the adjustable basics a good photographer needs to explore and refine their skill. With the advent of new cameras there will always be room for upgrades, but this is an entry level tool worth the money. Use this camera to see if you want to take photography to the next level. Great point and shoot in Auto mode for the family on the go.

This was my first D-SLR camera. And I'm still using it. Took great pictures right out of the box, and as my skills grew - the camera kept pace. I'm a big believer in shoot it right - not fix it later. And this camera does a great job and helps you learn all the basics. The menus and interface are a snap to learn. Frankly when I borrow my husband's D5000 I miss that!
You can't go wrong with this camera.

Hi, This was my first SLR camera. I was very happy with the ease of use. I started with the two lens camera package and slowly added a external flash ( SB 800 ) then a 35 mm, then sold the 18-55 and 55-200 and bought the 18-200 and the 55-300 lens. Recently sold the camera and bought a D7000.

This was my first dslr. It was simple to use, never took a bad picture and inspired me to learn more about photography to use more creative controls. It is fast and I never missed a picture of my puppys or my kids. Highly recommend

I bought this camera back in August 2007 because of a need of a negligible shutter delay found in P&S cameras. A DSLR was the only way to get an instantaneous shutter release. Now, with just over 6300 actuations, I always find subjects to shoot, and I never grow tired of it. For the beginning photographer, this entry-level DSLR is nothing short of amazing, and has everything you'll ever need. The only problems the D40x has given me were a series of switch shorts (the same switch!) in the flash mode selector button. I was without my camera three times, but at least I was still under warranty.
That aside, this camera has allowed me to grow as a beginning/intermediate photographer. But the Nikon D40x still leaves plenty of room for further growth!

This was my first dslr and it is amazing. Great quality and easy to use. The only draw back is that it does not shoot video. I would recommend this camera to anyone who shoots photography as a hobby and wants nice quality.

I have had my D40x since 2007, so it's almost 5 years old and has done about 50 000 shots. It's never broken nor has it had any focus issues. I also used the same battery all this time and only bought a second one a year ago as a back up. Only now has it lost a pixel for the first time. It was a very good buy and I enjoy the fact that it's light and compact. I guess it's time to upgrade to more features though!

I have owned this camera for a few years now, and it has served its purpose. I still use it as a back-up to my new D7000. It takes really good pictures and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to "break in" to the DSLR market. I have never had any issues with the camera not functioning properly, although with it only having 3 AF points it doesn't always capture what you want it to. You really are better off at times going to manual focus.

Bought my camer is 2007 and it is a Great Camera. The only problem is the built in flash goes after about 2-3 years. After reading other reviews I am not the only one. Cost $175 to fix. I go on mission trips and on my past trip I needed a camera while mine was being fixed. Bought a point and shoot. NO comparison. My Nikon D40X is a far superior product. I take many pictures of children during mission trips so the quick response is required for my pictures. Hopefully the flash won't need repair again.

camera is excellent in every respect.it has serve me well for the last three years.the only complaint I have is with the build in flash, which has stop working three times causing me to return the camera to service under warranty.the third time is going to be expensive since warranty has expire.spite my TLC this event keep happening.other wise a great camera that gives a great deal of pleasure to a photographer.

I learned on this camera. It is excellent for the beginner photographer who wants to do more than point and shoot. It is the gateway camera for a true photo addict. with 10.2mp, this camera takes great shots at a pretty entry level price too.

This camera was wonderful at first, but has broken twice in three years. The cost of repairs was zero for the first repair in year one, and $170 to fix it in year three. The auto focus did not work, and the manual setting did not focus.
